Kristen Newsom is an alumna of Ballet Center of Houston, receiving her early dance training under the direction of Victoria Vittum de Bethencourt and Barbara LeGault. She was a Houston Repertoire Ballet company member from 2004 – 2011. Kristen received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from Sam Houston State University studying Ballet, Modern and Aerial Arts as well as serving as Secretary for the University’s chapter of Chi Tau Epsilon. During her time at Sam Houston, Kristen studied under Jennifer Pontius, Dana Nicolay, Andy Noble, Alicia Carlin and many others. She recently performed works by Gerard Theoret of Cirque du Soleil and Dionne Sparkmann Noble of NobleMotion Dance, one of Houston’s most up and coming modern companies. Since 2009, Kristen has danced with Burklyn Ballet Theatre (BBT) as a student and a counselor and is now the Assistant Director for the Intermediate Program of BBT, coaching young students in many dance forms as both a teacher and mentor. She has travelled with BBT to Edinburgh Scotland to dance in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2009 and 2013.
In addition to pursuing her dance career, she has also had the opportunity to work behind the scenes doing technical theatre for companies such as Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, and has a deep passion for acting and all manner of stagecraft. Her choreography has been showcased in Huntsville, Texas with Sam Houston State University; Houston, Texas; and Johnson, Vermont and she was the recipient of the 2011 Choreography Award & Scholarship, hosted by Burklyn Ballet Theatre.
Guest Teachers: Ballet Center of Houston brings in many guest teachers throughout the year. Past guest teachers have included: Rudolph Kharatian, Zachary Carroll, Clara Cravey, Steve Brule, Andrew Murphy, Sabrina Lenzi, Tina Bohnstedt, Davida Haas, Keith Cross, Sara Webb, and Connor Walsh just to name a few.
